Almost Manic

Tuesday, September 21st, 2010

I just read “Just Manic Enough: Seeking Perfect Entrepreneurs “, a fascinating article in NY Times by David Segal.

This article really epitomizes the concept of Junoon. Here is an excerpt from the article “The attributes that make great entrepreneurs, the experts say, are common in certain manias, though in milder forms and harnessed in ways that are hugely productive. Instead of recklessness, the entrepreneur loves risk. Instead of delusions, the entrepreneur imagines a product that sounds so compelling that it inspires people to bet their careers, or a lot of money, on something that doesn’t exist and may never sell.”

The article goes on to describe the manic behavior of super achievers and how they are able to operate with unstoppable energy. It also points out how people such as Steve Jobs are able to change complete industries with their vision and their conviction.

Clearly the writer is describing the phase of ‘fanatic focus’ for the state of Junoon. Where your focus reaches such heights that you start to warp synchronicities towards you. In fanatic focus, you live in your goal and absolutely nothing distracts you from it. You’re up and running at the crack of dawn, and you don’t fall asleep until the early hours of the morning. You may not even need food, or require far less of it to sustain yourself.

However, the author also points out a couple of traits that often get associated with being in this state of Junoon. People in Junoon may come across as crazy and egomaniacs. This perception will make it hard to get the support you need – whether it’s from investors or spouses.

To get results from this state of obsession, entrepreneurs not only need to be driven, focused and operate at superhuman energy levels, they also have to be able to develop a “Cartesian Plan” – the what and how of their goal – and convert their Junoon into a “Social Junoon” to avoid coming across as crazy and an egomaniac.

The Cartesian Plan shows you have a logical and rational execution strategy and social Junoon allows others to take ownership of your Junoon and not only support it but spread it further. Without these, you may come across as loony instead of visionary.
